flights

The one bad thing about booking a last minute flight is that it appears the airlines then mark you as an automatic extra security check. Both flights we were all pulled aside for special screening. Nothing like taking a toddlers shoes and then leaving seperating him from his mom. True, he could stay with my husband, but he didnt understand why he had to go somewhere else and couldnt have his shoes. The way home wasnt too bad, but the flight down we almost missed. Steve's shoes set off some kind of thing on their sensors with the special wipey things they use. They were pulling out explosive chemical manuals and kept him for half an hour with a whole bunch of people asking him questions about his job, etc. He wears them working in the yard. Who knows what the heck he might have on those things. We got on our flight with like a minute to spare. We bought shoes for the trip back!

I think the security thing is just a little over the top. It's ridiculous that an obvious family going for a weekend is harrassed like that. Get real!! What did they think Steve was going to do? Induce Ian to start a hijacking?!?! That really irritates me...

airports

From what the security person told us we were flagged sight unseen. The special code just prints out on the tickets. I dont mind the added security. What bugged me is that we almost missed our flight and they wouldnt even let us leave the shoes and go. and since Steve was carrying my laptop and Ians things, that all had to be held as well. And they threw the playdoh away. I hadn't realized that would be a no-go item as well. It would have kept the little guy busy on the flight.

That's why I think it's stupid. You're obviously not a danger, you're traveling with a teenager and a toddler and they just get stupid.

I think I'm prejudiced because I've read too many articles of security people throwing around their weight to be be jerks.

This happened to me when I had to rush back home when my father was dying (he died while I was enroute). It was very stressful for me though I did understand the mindset. I was also flying one way since we didn't know when I would be able to come back, which basically made it a double flag!

I have a feeling if Steve wears them while working in the yard, then there might have been traces of fertilizers in them, and as we know, Fertilizer is 1/3 of the receipe for making a home-made bomb. I'm not 100% sure, but I think Fertilizer was what the Oklahoma city bombing was from....

I know it's not fair, and yeah it might have been obvious, but usually if you ask the security people to radio to the gate that you are atleast AT the airport, they'll hold a flight.
